New owners of radio station plan to reignite your love of reggae music

There’s a renewed sound in town. Now under the ownership of Russell “Rusty G” Griffith,
Michael Terceira and Teddy Terceira, Irie 98 has been revamped and officially relaunched.

Originally founded by Ben Fairn in November 2010, Irie 98 had been operating from Happy Valley Road. Having completed the acquisition in October 2023, the new owners have relocated the station to its new home on Front Street.

For DJ Rusty G, after over ten years of DJing on local radio stations, owning a radio station was not only the next logical step, but also a long standing dream. “I am so grateful to have found the perfect partners to work with on this venture”, said DJ Rusty G. “Michael, Teddy and I have worked tirelessly in silence for many months now.

This was a hard secret to keep and I was equally excited and nervous when I made an announcement about our acquisition of Irie on social media last week. The outpouring of love and support we have received from friends, family and our new Front Street neighbours has been out of this world. The feedback has been extremely positive. We are so grateful and excited for what’s to come.”

Co-owner Michael Terceira said, “It’s a real thrill to be part of the new Irie 98. Like many growing up in Bermuda, reggae was a massive part of our youth and continues to be a mainstay in our lives. I hope that this new multimedia journey with Russ will help to reinvigorate reggae culture in Bermuda and deepen the next generation’s appreciation for the Caribbean’s rich musical heritage.”

“It’s difficult to put into words my feeling of excitement at this new challenge Russ, my brother and I have started with taking over and rebranding Irie 98”, said co-owner Teddy Terceira. “Reggae has always been a love of mine and to step out of my routine and enter the music industry with Russ is a true honour. We want Irie to be a creative and uplifting presence in the community each and every day. I hope that ‘The Feel Good Station’ can inspire the positivity that Bermuda needs; the initial feedback has been overwhelming and makes me confident that we can.”

Irie 98 has historically been a reggae-only station. The new owners will maintain its reggae- focused essence, enhancing its musical selection with dancehall and tasteful hints of other genres, including afrobeats and soca. Special features so far include ‘What a Week’ by comedian, Mr Fotogenik every Friday at 5pm, The Morning Show with ET Flava on Monday- Friday from 7am-9am and ‘Monday Night Hype’ hosted by DJ iBreeze every Monday from 7pm- 9pm.

Listeners can tune in to 98.3 FM on their radios, via the brand new ‘Irie 98 FM’ app available for Apple and Android users or online at www.irie98.com. To keep up with the station, follow @irie98bermuda on Instagram. For advertising requests, please email rustyg@irie98.com.
