New champions will be crowned on Saturday at this year’s Bermuda Smash Invitational after Hamilton Parish Hurricanes were comprehensively beaten and so eliminated during Friday’s semifinals at North Field, National Sports Centre.
By definition, ‘spartan’ means undaunted by pain or danger, and in such fashion, Sandys Spartans captain Kamau Leverock strode fearlessly into the eye of the opposing storm and ruthlessly dismantled the threat posed by the defending champs.
Vantage points beyond the ropes became danger zones, while the inner circle was no less hazardous for fielders as the left-hander mercilessly pummeled Hurricanes’ attack on his way to a ton .
The 107 runs scored by Leverock from just 54 balls was the second highest individual score in the event’s history, enabling Spartans to an above-par team total of 220 for four.
Assistance in the scoring department came from Delray Rawlins [59] and overseas professional Chad Bowes [34], with Leverock engaging in century partnerships with each.
Needing to score in excess of 11 runs per over, Hurricanes, after getting off to a reasonable but not spectacular start, simply could not match the pace of scoring required, eventually falling 54 runs short in their over allotment.
Spartans will next face Pembroke Panthers, the most in-form side following the round robin phase, during Saturday’s final.
The unbeaten Panthers easily saw off Smith’s Sixers in the second semifinal, defeating them by six wickets.
Fabien Allen was key in the victory as he took three wickets for just 31 runs, before coming back to score a 21-ball 34 batting at number five.
The Sixers were once again exposed as the weakest team in the tournament, failing to earn a victory throughout the round-robin phase.
On the day, Sixers mustered a well below-par total of 129 from 20 overs, a target Panthers surpassed with 19 balls to spare.
