Yesterday morning at City Hall in Hamilton, the Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks, officially proclaimed this week as Fire Safety Awareness Week.
Joined by the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS), the event featured a public display, including one of the service’s newest emergency trucks equipped with a high-reaching ladder capable of accessing any building in Bermuda during a fire or emergency.
Minister Weeks emphasised the collective responsibility of fire safety: “Fire safety is a collective effort that extends beyond the expertise of our fire professionals. It involves each one of us taking proactive steps to prevent incidents before they occur.
“This week provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we can contribute to safer homes, workplaces and our environment. I encourage everyone to engage with the programmes and activities planned by attending workshops, participating in community drills, and educating yourselves and your families about the simple actions that can prevent a fire.”
Chief Fire Officer Dana Lovell offered practical advice to residents. “One of the most effective ways to prevent fire-related incidents is by ensuring your smoke detectors are functioning properly,” he stated.
“We recommend checking your smoke detectors monthly and replacing the batteries at least once a year. Additionally, having a fire escape plan and practising it with your family can save lives in an emergency.”
The Chief Fire Officer also highlighted the capabilities of the new emergency truck on display.
He added: “Our latest addition to the fleet enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies in any building across the Island. This equipment is a testament to our commitment to utilising advanced technology to protect our community.”
The BFRS has organised a series of events throughout Fire Safety Awareness Week, including community outreach programmes and tours of the Hamilton Station for schoolchildren.
