MWI COO: Facility Not Closing Anytime Soon

Preston Swan, Chief Operating Officer and Vice-President of Clinical Operations at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI), would like members of the public to know that the closure of the Devon Spring Road facility will take at least ten years.

This is because its closure and
redevelopment will require a state master-plan from BHB, a major business case and major funding, none of which are in place right now.

“ [Until our Devonshire facility closes], we will be doing services in the community, having most
of our services away from the building, getting more access into community settings, whether that be in the west or east end,” he said. “ The funding is the key part of how we move this forward; without funding, this [directorate] plan would not be possible.”

According to Mr. Swan, the goal of the entire MWI team is to make an impact on how mental health services are viewed and accessed in the future. That goal does not have a strict time limit. He also made it clear that the organization does not only help those suffering with mental
illness, but also provides services and guidance to those with intellectual disabilities and substance abuse problems.

“ We are not waiting for our building to close to start moving services now and [are] integrating the community as much as we possibly can,” he said. “ If we deal with the stigma part and find ourselves to be more accessible, more people will come to us and we can provide early
intervention . . . ultimately, it’s all about the patient. The service that we provide has to be patient-focused and must benefit the patient at the end stage.”
MWI’s main number is 236 3770. Those who may be experiencing a mental health crisis and require immediate assistance should call the crisis number at 239 1111.
