Ms. Winifred Leona Thompson Honored on Her Historic 108th Birthday

In a heartwarming gathering filled with love, laughter, and reverence, family, friends, and dignitaries came together today at Dorothy Crane Nursery Home in St. George to celebrate a monumental milestone—the 108th birthday of Ms. Winifred Leona Thompson.

Held in a spirit of joy and gratitude, the celebration was organized by devoted staff and family members who have stood by Ms. Thompson through decades of Bermuda’s evolving history. Among the special guests in attendance was the Acting Premier and Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Weeks, area MP’s Renee Ming, Lavita Foggo and Kim Swan who shared heartfelt reflections on the significance of the day.

“Well, I’d just say, WOW

,” Minister Weeks began with a smile, capturing the awe felt by many in the room. “First of all, I was honored to be able to come down here in the capacity of Acting Premier. When I heard about this birthday party, I jumped at the opportunity.”

With deep respect, he spoke of Ms. Thompson’s remarkable journey and the wealth of history she represents. “Just imagine—108 years. The stories that Ms. Thompson could tell, the life she’s lived… She’s seen Bermuda change from nothing to something. She’s witnessed the days of horse and buggy, trains running on tracks—things you and I have only heard about. But she lived it.”

The Acting Premier noted how experiences like this, connecting with citizens whose lives span over a century, are among the most meaningful parts of public service. “A lot of what we do as politicians is duty—but this, this is the people part. It’s what makes it worth it. Speaking with someone like Ms. Thompson, it’s truly a blessing.”

While she may now hold the distinction of being the second oldest living Bermudian, Ms. Thompson’s vitality and grace left a lasting impression. “She’s still able to talk, to smile, to share a moment—and it makes you reflect,” Weeks added. “From now on, I’m going to stop complaining about my ailments and just give thanks.”

With a beaming smile and a warm voice, the Minister closed his remarks with a heartfelt tribute:

“Happy birthday, Ms. Thompson.”

Today, Bermuda paused to honor not just longevity, but a living legacy—a woman who has not only witnessed history, but has become part of it.
