Ms Maxanne Anderson Appointed New Senior Magistrate

Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie, announced the appointment of Ms Maxanne Anderson as Senior Magistrate with effect from 1 July 2022.

 

This appointment follows an open and competitive recruitment process and a recommendation received from the Judicial and Legal Services Committee.

 

Her Excellency said, “I am very pleased to announce Ms Anderson’s appointment, following the recommendation of the Judicial & Legal Services Committee. Ms Anderson has demonstrated that she has the skills and experience to take on the additional challenges of managing the administration of the Magistrates’ Court.”

 

Ms Anderson said, “It is truly an honour and privilege to be of service for my country. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly but will carry out with dignity, fairness, firmness, and humility.  I would like to thank my family and friends for their love and support.  Bermuda is our home, and we must all do our part to ensure a legacy for our future to enjoy”.

 

Ms Anderson was sworn in six years ago as a Magistrate and she currently serves as the  Chairman of the Family Court and overseas the Drug Treatment Court, Mental Health Treatment Court and DUI (Driving Under the Influence) Treatment Court.

 

Ms Anderson attended the Purvis Primary, the Warwick Academy and Saltus Post-Graduate Year. In 1993 Ms Anderson obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Spelman College majoring in Philosophy with a Minor in Economics.

Ms Anderson obtained her law degree at the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1995 and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1997, and to the Bermuda Bar in 1999.

 

After she completed a pupillage with Appleby, Spurling & Kempe, Ms Anderson continued her career in private practice with Francis & Forrest between 1999 and 2002, and Attride-Stirling & Woloniecki between 2002 and 2006. From 2007 she served as Senior Legal Counsel in the Ministry of Economic Development and from 2014 until 2016 she also served as Acting Director of the Department of Telecommunications.

Ms Anderson is a Member of The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, the National Association of Parliamentarians, the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers – Management Committee and a member of the Commonwealth Magistrates & Judges Association.

 

Ms Anderson has a keen interest in her community and divides her philanthropic time between Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated [both in the Bermuda Alumni Chapter and on the international level] where she currently serves as Parliamentarian of the International Region and Deaconess at the Hamilton SDA Church. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, baking, reading and personal fitness.

The appointment of Senior Magistrate is made by the Governor after consultation with the Judicial and Legal Services Committee (JLSC).  The post of Senior Magistrate was advertised and candidates were interviewed by the JLSC, who then made a recommendation to the Governor which she accepted.
