Maria Sofianos Appointed as Bermuda’s Newest Magistrate

Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie, announced the appointment of Ms Maria Sofianos as Magistrate with effect from 1 November 2022.

This appointment follows an open and competitive recruitment process and a recommendation received from the Judicial and Legal Services Committee.

The Governor said, “I am very pleased to announce Ms Sofianos’ appointment as Magistrate following consultation with the Chief Justice and the recommendation of the Judicial & Legal Services Committee. Ms Sofianos is highly qualified to take on the challenges of this role, not only from her experience as an Acting Magistrate but also from her wider legal experience as a Crown Counsel. I wish Ms Sofianos well in her new position.”

Ms Sofianos attended Port Royal Primary School and Warwick Academy in Bermuda. She obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University in Kent in 2005 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Professional and Legal Skills from the Inns of Court School of Law in 2006.

She was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2006, and to the Bermuda Bar in 2007. Ms Sofianos is a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn.

After completing a pupillage with Legal Aid and the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Ms Sofianos started with the Department of Public Prosecutions in 2007 as Crown Counsel (Junior Grade). She was made Crown Counsel in 2012.

Ms Sofianos has served as an Acting Magistrate since 2016 on an ad hoc basis.
The appointment of Magistrate is made by the Governor after consultation with the Chief Justice and recommendation from the Judicial and Legal Services Committee (JLSC). The post of Magistrate was advertised and candidates were interviewed by the JLSC, who then made a recommendation to the Governor which she accepted.
