TNN News has learned that the Westgate Correctional Facility has reportedly been without water for approximately two and a half days, with sources indicating that inmates and prison officers are currently dealing with a lack of flushing water.
TNN understands that the latest disruption is linked to an ongoing plumbing problem at the facility, with concerns about the water supply reportedly having been raised for some time.
According to information reaching TNN, the Minister responsible for Public Works has been made aware of the situation, while the country’s leader has also reportedly been informed.
TNN further understands that inmates and prison officers have repeatedly raised concerns with the Commissioner of Prisons regarding sporadic water outages and other infrastructure-related problems at Westgate.
The latest water issue is being described as just one of a number of ongoing problems at the correctional facility.
TNN has been told of reported electrical problems, power shortages and issues involving cell doors — including instances where doors allegedly fail to open when required or, in other circumstances, open automatically.
The accumulation of these reported problems is raising further questions about the overall condition, maintenance and management of the Westgate Correctional Facility.
The absence of flushing water for an extended period also raises obvious concerns about sanitation and the basic operating conditions inside the facility.
TNN News is seeking confirmation and comment from the relevant authorities, including the Ministry responsible for Public Works, the Department of Corrections and the Commissioner of Prisons.
