Ministry of Public Works Addresses Flooding Caused by Heavy Rainfall

The Ministry of Public Works wishes to acknowledge to the public that the intensity of the rain has temporarily exceeded Bermuda’s roadways and drainage systems’ capacity to dissipate water swiftly.

During prolonged rainstorms, the volume of water can surpass the dissipation rates of grates, pits, detention areas, and wall openings designed for drainage.

This can lead to temporary pooling on roads and properties. However, the drainage systems will function as intended if floodwaters recede within 2-4 hours after the rain stops. Prolonged standing water beyond this period may suggest areas that require further attention.

Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David A. Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP, said: “We recognise the difficulties that today’s unprecedented heavy rainfall has caused for our community.

“The sheer volume of water overwhelmed our drainage infrastructure, which is designed to handle typical weather patterns. This extraordinary weather event is the primary reason for the flooding we are experiencing.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as the water recedes and the drainage systems return to normal function.”

The Ministry advises all residents to exercise caution:

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas: Seek alternative routes to prevent vehicle damage or stalling.

  • Consider parking in safe locations: If caught in heavy rain, find a secure place to wait until conditions improve.

  • Reduce road traffic: Carpooling can help minimise the number of vehicles navigating flood-prone areas.

  • Work from home if possible: This reduces congestion and potential road hazards.

To enhance the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to address drainage concerns, the public is encouraged to report flooding issues by emailing potholes@gov.bm.

These reports will be cross-referenced with existing data on drainage-prone areas to develop and implement improvement plans. Community involvement plays a crucial role in mitigating drainage issues:

  • Property Maintenance: Residents and businesses should ensure that landscaping debris, such as leaves, is not blown into roadways. Construction sites must take precautions to prevent sand and other materials from entering the streets.

  • Keep Drains Clear: Clearing debris from roadway grates and inlet systems near properties can significantly improve water flow and reduce flooding risks. During heavy rains, debris accumulation can quickly lead to clogged drains.

The Ministry appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the public during this time. By working together, the impact of heavy rainfall can be minimised, ensuring safer conditions for all residents and visitors.
