Minister Tinee Furbert Applauds the Positive Work in Bermuda’s Community Youth Centres

The Hon. Tinee Furbert, Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, visited Bermuda’s three community youth centers to tour the facilities and to engage with students and staff. Minister Furbert spent time at all three locations, the Western Zone Community Centre, the Sammy Wilson Central Zone Community Centre, and the Eastern Zone community centre throughout the month of August, reconfirming the Bermuda Government’s ongoing commitment to fostering a brighter and more equitable future for Bermuda’s youth.

Minister Furbert celebrated the positive impact these community spaces have had on the lives of Bermuda’s young people, stating, “As this government looks to bring about a better and fairer Bermuda for its youth, our children must have the opportunity to engage in programs outside of their regular school day that continues to support their development socially, emotionally, and creatively. During my visits to the West, East, and Central centers, I was again deeply moved by the caring, committed, and dedicated staff who nurture our young people. The love I felt from the students I engaged with was heartwarming.”

Throughout her time at the centres, Minister Furbert actively participated in a variety of enriching activities, from learning new dance moves to crafting jewelry and keychains. The Minister also took on challenges from the children in Olympic-style games and enjoyed indoor and outdoor fun. These interactions were more than just moments of enjoyment—they were opportunities that reaffirmed the valuable skills being cultivated at the centres, such as teamwork, innovation, and a love for learning.

Nadine Henry, Senior Youth Services and Development Officer, stated, “The dedication and energy of both the children and the staff in our programmes is truly inspiring. It warms my heart every time to witness youth fully engaged in activities that not only entertain them but also contribute to their development. The TOYA programmes go beyond fun – they’re about nurturing skills that will benefit our youth in the future. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the parents and guardians for trusting us with their little ones, and to our incredible staff for their love and commitment to supporting our youth.”

This summer has been a season of celebration for Bermuda’s youth, with The Office of Youth Affairs ensuring that young people are recognized for their contributions to the community. From the successful collaboration during the National 18+ Youth Conference to the festivities on International Youth Day, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors has been at the forefront of highlighting the talents and achievements of Bermuda’s next generation.

Minister Furbert also emphasized the critical role that parents play in young people’s development and success. She stated, “Our young people are our future, and we have seen just how talented they are. But behind every thriving child we often see very supportive parents. In our commitment to support parents and families, we proudly launched the Parenting Tips monthly series to offer encouragement and advice as they navigate the challenges of daily life so they can be the best versions of themselves for themselves and their families.”

“The Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors remains focused on its mission to build a better and fairer Bermuda for all families. The work being done at our community youth centres is a testament to this commitment, providing our children and parents with the tools they need to grow, thrive, and contribute positively to Bermuda’s future.”
