The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, Sen. Owen K. Darrell, JP, met with Bermuda football legend and former English Premier League player Shaun Goater, MBE.
Today’s relaxed meet and greet was an opportunity for the Minister to discuss local football, youth development and sports in general with one of Bermuda’s most recognizable athletes.
Minister Darrell said, “The public will know that Mr. Goater famously played as a striker for Manchester City. He’s one of Bermuda’s most accomplished sports stars. Shaun’s had an incredible and storied career, and he continues to give back to the youth. He’s currently with Manchester City as part of their Academy coaching staff and continues to maintain a connection here at home.”
The Minister continued, “I was pleased to chat with Shaun about our Ministry’s vision and focus for Bermuda’s young people particularly as it relates to sports. We talked about our National Sports Policy as well as our recently launched High-Performance Sponsorship programme, which provides funding for athletes who are doing amazing things on the local and world sports stage.
“We’ve seen some amazing success with our young people and elite athletes, and I told Shaun that the Government is committed to ensuring that our athletes are properly supported. So, it was an honour to meet with Mr. Goater today and have a robust discussion about the role and importance of sports in our community.”
