MP Michael Weeks Marks 14th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway with Community Event
MP Michael Weeks brought the community together Saturday for his annual back-to-school giveaway, providing school bags, supplies, food and entertainment for children and families in his constituency.
The event, held at the Victor Scott Primary School parking lot and field, offered students an opportunity to receive free backpacks and other school necessities ahead of the new school year.
Speaking with TNN News, Weeks said this year marked the 14th staging of the event, with the initiative first launched in 2010. He noted that the giveaway was paused for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We normally get anywhere in the area, about 200 to 250 children alone a day,” Weeks said, adding that organizers were initially concerned about the rain but expected families to come out once conditions improved.
The event featured a range of activities, including face painting, treats, food and a train ride planned for children and seniors, weather permitting.
Weeks also highlighted a community partnership with Birdies Lunch Cart, which provided free hamburgers and hot dogs as part of its community giveback initiative.
The MP, who represents Constituency 16, said the event reflects his longstanding connection to the community.
Weeks was first elected in 2009 and said he has always considered himself a grassroots representative, having been born and raised in the area.
“I’m born and raised, and to be considered one of the most grassroots Parliamentarians, I take that humbly,” he said. “I’ve always been in the hood and working with our community.”
Weeks also reflected on his previous work as a drug and alcohol counsellor and his efforts working with young men at risk, saying his commitment to the community goes beyond politics.
The event comes as Weeks continues his campaign for deputy leader of the Progressive Labour Party.
Asked what he would say to delegates who remain undecided, Weeks encouraged them to speak with him directly.
“Come and talk to me at any time, send me advice, ask me questions, because I’m always prepared to listen and ready to learn,” he said.
Weeks described himself as a believer in servant leadership rather than self-interest and urged delegates to get to know him before making their decision.
The annual giveaway ran from noon until 4 p.m., with Weeks encouraging residents to come out and take advantage of the free school supplies, food and activities.
“There’s something for everyone,” Weeks said.
