Mexico completes rout of Bermuda in Davis Cup

Mexico barely broke a sweat to complete a 4-0 rout of Bermuda in the country’s Davis Cup World Group II tie at W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium today (Sunday).

Facing the improbable task of coming back from a 0-2 deficit after a pair of singles losses to the visiting Central American nation, the Island’s miracle hopes were quickly dashed in doubles. Daniel Phillips and Trey Mallory both losers on Day 1  were routinely dispatched 6-2, 6-0 by the tandem of Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes and Alan Magadan, giving Mexico an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The fourth match, involving the reverse singles, saw Tariq Simons make his official return to international duty, but with disappointing results, as he was no match for Mexico’s No. 3 player Alan Fernando Rubio Fierros. Simons was outclassed 6-0, 6-2 in just 57 minutes.

At 4-0 in favour of Mexico, Mallory and Magadan did not play the inconsequential fifth match.

As a result, Bermuda will be demoted to a lower rung of the competition.
