MEXICO BEATS BERMUDA, BUT HOPE REMAINS

Mexico took control of the Davis Cup World Group II tie today at W.E.R. Joell, leaving Bermuda down 0-2 after two singles matches.

Daniel Phillips started strong, conceding only one point in his first service game. However, Alan Magadán, ranked 514th in the world, quickly broke serve and took the first set 6-4. Phillips fought back to narrow the gap but lost momentum and dropped the second set 6-1.

Trey Mallory kept pace with Alex Hernández in the first set, but lost his serve at 3-3 and eventually lost 6-4. He briefly led in the second set, but Hernández won six of the next seven games to finish 6-4, 6-2.

Despite being down 0-2, Bermuda still has a chance. Phillips and Mallory will team up in the doubles match tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Magadán and Luis Carlos Álvarez Valdés. Bermuda needs a win to stay in contention.
