Southampton Rangers maintained their dominant form on Sunday, beating chief rivals St George’s by 42 runs at Southampton Oval.
Even as the East Enders’ openers hinted at reward and the tail mounted an unlikely fightback, the final tally still delivered the expected victory for the home team.
On a day when perfection in all phases was required, St George’s wasted numerous fielding chances, spilling catches as if the balls were made of repelling leather.
Their failure to capitalise on the chances created by reckless strokeplay from Rangers’ opening batsmen Onias Bascome and Delray Rawlins ultimately cost the visitors a chance to win the match.
Bascome benefited to the tune of 95 runs, while Rawlins managed 66; the pair engaged in a 166-run stand for the first wicket.
Even as the middle and late order struggled, with only Dion Stovell [37] and Jordan DeSilva [38] contributing significantly, Rangers still reached 300, a challenging target.
Rahul Sapra and young Keegan Jones led the bowling, each taking four wickets at reasonable cost.
Jonte Smith [44] and Nzari Paynter [36] were solid in the early reply, though the middle overs underwhelmed.
From 76 for one, St George’s stumbled to 187 for eight, and the end appeared nigh.
However, Rahul Sapra [12] joined Anandu Anil [49 not out] for a 44-run ninth-wicket partnership that pushed the score well past 200 and stirred nerves.
After Sapra departed, Anil continued with Garvel Stanislaus [11], whose three straight sixes off Dion Stovell raised hopes of the impossible.
It never happened, as Stanislaus was dismissed at the death by Allan Douglas Jr.
Analytics named Rawlins Man-of-the-Match for his batting and for taking four for 52 from 10 overs of orthodox left-arm slow bowling.
In the other Premier match, Bailey’s Bay completed a triumphant weekend by defeating Somerset by 67 runs at Sea Breeze Oval.
In First Division play, PHC beat Somerset Bridge by five wickets.
