Man Charged With Causing Two Deaths In Apartment Explosion

A 53-year-old man was today charged with causing two deaths in an horrific  explosion at a Southampton Complex Apartment one year ago today.

Robert Tota was charged in Magistrates’ Court with unlawfully killing Husband and Wife, Oscar and Jove Mascarinas on the night of May 2, 2022.

Tota was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offences, as the matter must be heard in the Supreme Court.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Cindy Clarke, said that the charges related to allegations of gross negligence, and that it is alleged that Mr. Tota was responsible for installing a gas stove at the Hilltop Court Appartment.

Mr Tota was bailed to the sum of $8,000 with a like surety and is expected to appear in the Supreme Court on June 1st, monthly arraignment session.

Mr Mascarinas, 49, was seriously injured and later pronounced dead at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Mrs Mascarinas, his 50-year-old wife, was critically injured in the blast and was pronounced dead one week after the explosion took place.
