“Mama Say Something” New Forum Empowers Single Moms to Break Generational Cycles

Sunday evening, Monique Stevens launched a powerful new initiative called Mama Say Something, aimed at creating a supportive network for single mothers to discuss their challenges and explore solutions. Held as the first in a planned series of meetings, the forum brought together women to share experiences and spark meaningful conversations about the struggles of single parenthood.

TNN spoke with Monique Stevens, the event organizer, who explained the inspiration behind the forum. It comes from a place that I resonate with as a single mother, she shared. From my background as a former police officer, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges mothers face and realized there’s a gap in how we conduct ourselves, how we perpetuate generational cycles, and how we can spark change in raising our children.

Monique emphasized the importance of confronting difficult issues, including the absence of fathers in homes. We need to raise questions and have these discussions to find solutions, she said. Generational trauma and childhood trauma are often misunderstood. In Bermuda, we see how these unresolved issues contribute to youth involvement in gang violence and drug-related activities, which are often linked to single-parent households.

A key topic of the evening was the emerging trend of single fathers gaining custody from birth and the complex dynamics this introduces. It’s a notion I’ve recently encountered, Stephens admitted. While I can’t personally relate, it’s important to acknowledge that men face their own struggles. These are the conversations we need to have.

The forum encouraged open dialogue, with participants addressing shame, guilt, and societal pressures associated with single motherhood. Stevens expressed her vision for the initiative, stating, I want everyone to bring something to the table. This is just the beginning plan to host more events, forums, conferences, meetups, and support groups to empower single mothers and break the cycles holding us back.

Ms. Stevens revealed her long-term goal of transforming Mama Say Something into a ministry. This is something I considered many years ago. I now see how necessary it is, and I’m committed to making it a reality.

The inaugural meeting left attendees inspired and hopeful for future discussions. Ms.Stevens invites community organizations, self-help groups, and even corporate sponsors to collaborate and support the movement.

As Mama Say Something gains momentum, Monique Stevens aims to create a safe space for single mothers to express themselves, learn from one another, and build a community of resilience and growth.
