The community action group M.O.V.E. Bermuda — which stands for Mobilize, Organize, Visualize, and Execute — held its first-ever Community Awards Dinner and Entertainment event last evening, celebrating the work of individuals making a positive impact on the island.
Honorees included Trevor Lindsay of TNN, recognized for his extensive community work; Ellan K. Horton and the Westend Warriors, applauded for their efforts in saving Westend Primary School from closure — a battle that spanned three years; and HOT 107’s, Magic and Inter Island Communications (IIC) CEO Glenn Blakeney, honored for their contributions in helping M.O.V.E. spread its message to the broader public.
MOVE Bermuda’s Chairman, Willie Ferguson, explained the inspiration and process behind the awards:
“Too often in Bermuda, we see people doing great things — even our neighbors — and they go unacknowledged. You hear the phrase ‘give them their flowers now,’ and that’s exactly what we wanted to do.”
Ferguson shared that the idea of creating a community award was first envisioned by M.O.V.E. founder Jan Martin and members of the founding team about four years ago.
“Financial constraints delayed us from launching it sooner. Sadly, Jan passed away three years ago, and I felt it was time to make this vision a reality in his honor.”
The selection of award recipients, Ferguson said, was guided by the values and mission of M.O.V.E. Bermuda, as well as thoughtful reflection and prayer.
“The recipients were an easy choice. They truly deserved it. I believe that by recognizing them, we will inspire others across the island to get involved and serve the community as well.”
Trevor Lindsay, one of the recipients, thanked Ferguson and the organization:
“It’s an honor to be recognized as part of the very first M.O.V.E. Awards. I look forward to seeing this become an annual tradition that highlights the positive work happening in Bermuda.”
Ferguson added that the response from the community has already been overwhelming:
“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing. People are excited and encouraged. I’m proud that we pulled it off, and I’m even prouder that we’re going to continue this each year.”
M.O.V.E. Bermuda hopes this initiative will not only honor deserving individuals but also inspire a new wave of community action and leadership throughout the island.
