Leverock century puts Somerset in command of Cup Match
Scores: 1st innings Somerset 345/9 [declared]
St George’s 80/5
A magnificent maiden Cup Match hundred by Kamau Leverock put Somerset in a strong position after Day One of the annual Cup Match Classic. Promoted to the top of the order to partner captain Terryn Fray, the all-rounder repaid the champions’ faith with an individual contribution of 153.
In the process, the retired Bermuda international registered the fasted hundred in the game’s history, while engaging in a 169-run first-wicket partnership, also a record.
By the time the batsman was out, well caught by substitute fielder Luke Horan off Nazri Paynter, the home team was well on their way to a seemingly impregnable total of 345 for nine declared.
Fray [51], dropped twice, marked his first outing as skipper with a charmed half-century.
Sent in to bat after the tea break on a flat pitch, but one accepting turn, St George’s openers were cautious, with Paynter and Oronde Bascome requiring 40 balls to reach 17.
The 41st saw Leverock remove Bascome with a delivery that eluded the right-hander, shattering his stumps.
Paynter [35] and colt Marcus Scotland [29 not out] then put up the shutters in a 47-run second-wicket partnership.
To the dismay of the visitors and their fans, the floodgates opened when Dion Stovell bowled Paynter, commencing a middle-order collapse.
Jonte Smith [zero], Delray Rawlins [one] and captain Onias Bascome [one] all went cheaply as the east enders fell to 66 for five.
At the day’s close Scotland and fellow colt Jarryd Richardson [five not out] remained at the wicket, with their side yet needing another 65 runs to avoid a possible follow-on being imposed by Somerset.
