Leadership Shake-Up at Teen Services and Teen Haven Amid Financial Concerns

TNN has received reports of major changes within the leadership of Teen Services and Teen Haven following mounting concerns over unpaid staff and internal unrest. Sources confirm that a secret ballot was held last week, resulting in the removal of Roxanne Christopher as Chairperson of the organization.

TNN reached out to Minister Tinee Furbert, the government minister responsible for the ministry that oversees funding for Teen Services and Teen Haven, for clarification on the situation and the government’s role.

When asked about the alleged staff payment delays and the leadership vote, Minister Furbert  made it clear that while the government does provide financial support, it does not interfere in the charity’s internal affairs.

“Government does not have any dealings with the operations of Teen Services or Teen Haven,” Minister Furbert stated. “Government does provide a grant to the amount of $400,000 per year to Teen Services and Teen Haven, but we do not get involved in the operations. They are responsible for their own accounting and management.”

TNN also questioned the minister about what oversight mechanisms exist to ensure that taxpayer-funded grants are properly managed. Minister Furbert emphasized that while oversight exists, operational decisions remain within the board’s control.

“There are checks and balances,” she explained. “We constantly review how they are spending their funds; however, we don’t tell them how they should spend those funds. That is a board or executive decision.”

According to Minister Furbert, Teen Services and Teen Haven are registered charities that fall under the oversight of the Charities Commission.

“Every year they are required to submit an annual report to the Charities Commission,” she said. “The Commission reviews their financials and operational practices and determines whether the charity is being properly run.”

While the government maintains a hands-off approach to daily operations, the situation has raised questions within the community regarding accountability, transparency, and the welfare of staff reportedly awaiting payment.

As of now, the organization has not released an official statement on the leadership change or the status of staff compensation.
