Judy Simons Honoured with the CANOC “Caribbean Distinguished Service” Award

Last week, during the inaugural CANOC Sports Awards in Turks & Caicos, the late Judy Simons was posthumously honoured with the prestigious “Caribbean Distinguished Service

This award, presented by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), recognized Simons’ remarkable contributions to sports in the Caribbean, particularly through her longstanding
involvement in the Olympic movement.

The event was a grand gathering of the region’s finest athletes, teams, and sports leaders, all gathered to celebrate excellence in Caribbean sports. As the announcement of Simons’ name was made, the room was filled with emotion. Secretary General Branwen Smith-King, who accepted the award on Simons’ behalf, was visibly moved as she paid tribute to Simons’ legacy.

Branwen Smith-King commented, “The Caribbean Distinguished Service Award presented posthumously to Judy on October 19th by CANOC, was both well deserved and emotional for all that knew her. Judy’s contribution to sport in Bermuda reaches beyond our borders and we are indebted to her services. As past President of the Bermuda Olympic Association Judy’s leadership, passion for helping others and love for sport was inspirational. She has left a legacy that truly cannot be duplicated. This award is a testament to Judy’s greatness as a person and sport
administrator.”

BOA President Peter Dunne stated “Judy’s leadership and reputation in the international sports organizations have done much for the advancement of Bermuda and our athletes. Her reputation as a The Bermuda Olympic Association strong advocate for the BOA and other small national Olympic committees was well earned and will be missed greatly by all who knew her and benefitted from her experience. Judy often referred to the 2020 gold medal of Flora Duffy as the pinnacle of her BOA career, but her legacy as a relationship builder will be remembered for years to come, always for the benefit of the BOA. Bermuda’s standing
in global sport is due in large part to Judy’s dedication to the movement and her ability to develop strong bonds with her colleagues. We will continue to benefit from her work and reflect on her service as a model for all to emulate.”

Simons’ work and dedication to sports in Bermuda and across the Caribbean have left an indelible mark, and her recognition at this prestigious event is a testament to the lasting impact she had on the sporting community.
