What difference can a year make? For Jayce Fough , it made all the difference.
During the Berkeley Institute’s annual graduation ceremony at the Flora Duffy National Stadium on Friday, Jayce Fough’s inspiring journey became one of the day’s most memorable moments after he was awarded the prestigious Principal’s Cup.
Just one year ago, Jayce Fough fell short of graduating. He did not make the final cut, forcing him to make one of the toughest decisions of his young life—return to school and start again.
Rather than allowing disappointment to define him, Fough humbled himself and came back for all three semesters. He endured the challenge of studying alongside peers who had once been behind him but had since moved ahead. Through it all, he remained focused on one goal: finishing what he started.
Reflecting on what motivated him to return, Fough credited the lessons his mother instilled in him from an early age.
“The never-give-up spirit that my mama instilled in me since I was young,” he said. “I’ve never been able to start something and not finish it. So I had to lock in, do what I had to do, and walk across that stage.”
Foughs parents, Kimeisha and Ornet Fough, watched proudly as their son accepted one of the institution’s highest honors.
Asked what it meant to make his family and the wider community proud, Fough smiled.
“It makes me feel good—happy that I could spread my joy around with my story.”
His advice for anyone facing setbacks was simple but powerful.
“Never give up. Everything will always get better if you put yourself in a position to get better. Put your best foot forward and you’ll get the best out of it. Don’t ever give up on yourself. Yourself is your best asset.”
Looking ahead, Fough plans to enter the workforce before pursuing studies in marine engineering next year.
His journey serves as a reminder that success is not always measured by how quickly you reach the finish line, but by the courage to keep going after life’s setbacks.
For many in attendance, Jayce Fough wasn’t just a graduate—he became a symbol of resilience, proving that determination, humility, and perseverance can turn yesterday’s disappointment into today’s greatest achievement.
