John Seymour 12 years is longer than 12 days stay the course says Michael Weeks

It is unfortunate that OBA candidate, John Seymour, a newcomer to both our community and the political arena, has chosen to resort to unfounded accusations rather than engage in constructive dialogue about the real issues facing Pembroke East Central. His tweet suggesting that I am “lazy” lacks both substance and understanding of the hard work that goes into public service.

Public service is about delivering tangible results—not empty rhetoric or staged photo opportunities.

The residents of Pembroke East Central are not fooled by cheap shots; they know that true leadership involves rolling up one’s sleeves, actively listening to the community, and diligently working to improve the lives of those we serve.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on a few of the significant achievements that demonstrate my unwavering commitment to this constituency. I initiated vital funding for a new lighting system at Victor Scott Primary School field ensuring that community organizations sports clubs and churches have a well-lit and safe environment for their activities. I host monthly constituency clinics at Victor Scott Primary School for C16 voters and residents.

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, in collaboration with C11 and C15, I provided 300 meals weekly in partnership with Supermart Limited and I donate books to Victor Scott Preschool while volunteering to read to the children. I actively partner with nontraditional education providers to help young people achieve their GED qualifications. In addition to hosting an annual senior’s tea to honour and celebrate our esteemed elders, I organize a yearly back to school event at Victor Scott Primary that distributes hundreds of backpacks and supplies to children in need. Throughout the year I provide food families and coordinate an annual Christmas Turkey giveaway. I also lead community cleanups and collaboration with KBB. This is what true community service looks like.

As Minister of National Security, my responsibilities encompass overseeing the Customs, Police, Fire Services, the Bermuda Regiment, and the Gang Violence Reduction Team. I am focused on keeping Bermuda safe and addressing the root causes of crime. This work may not always make headlines, but it is vital for the well-being of our islands and our communities.

Politics is undoubtedly challenging, and it is not uncommon for individuals to make sweeping statements in hopes of swaying public opinion. However, I urge Mr. Seymour and others to take the time to better understand the complexities of governance. There is no shame in being new to this arena; we all have to start somewhere. A commitment to learning and genuine engagement with the issues will serve him—and our community—far better than misguided attacks.

My door is always open to those who wish to genuinely understand the challenges we face and contribute to finding solutions. However, those who seek to distract from meaningful progress with theatrics and baseless accusations will find no audience here. The people of Constituency 16 Pembroke East Central, and indeed all of Bermuda, deserve leaders dedicated to progress and substantive change, not political games.

Let’s focus on what really matters: enhancing the lives of our seniors, families, and communities while taking action to Build a Fairer Bermuda.
