A Jamaican national who remains in custody at Westgate Correctional Facility more than five months after becoming eligible for deportation is speaking publicly through family members, describing what he says has been a lengthy and frustrating wait for immigration authorities to complete the process.
The man, who was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for sexual offences involving a child, told TNN News that he has now completed approximately 10 years of his sentence and has been awaiting deportation since February after his release date.
According to the inmate, a deportation order was expected to be carried out shortly after he completed his custodial sentence. However, he says he remains in custody while awaiting action by immigration authorities.
The Jamaican national also claims he pursued an appeal against his conviction, supported by affidavits from individuals he says were prepared to testify on his behalf. He alleges the appeal was dismissed after witnesses were reportedly said not to have attended court, a claim he disputes.
He further alleges that his former wife fabricated the allegations against him as part of a dispute over money and continues to maintain that he is innocent of the offences for which he was convicted.
“I just want to go home,” he told TNN News. “I’ve been waiting since February to be deported.”
The inmate said he has family in Jamaica but expressed concern about returning, claiming he fears for his safety because of the nature of his conviction. Despite those concerns, he says he wants the deportation process completed so he can return to his home country.
The statements made by the inmate regarding his conviction, appeal and the motives of others are allegations made by him and have not been independently verified by TNN News. His conviction was upheld by the courts, and there is no indication that it has been overturned.
