It didn’t have to end like this says landlord

A protracted and contentious battle between a landlord and tenants has culminated in a court-ordered eviction that has left both parties in a state of frustration. The situation, which began six years ago when the tenants stopped paying rent, has escalated into a legal saga characterized by the tenants having boarded-up windows, changed locks, as well as deteriorating living conditions.

The landlord telling TNN, they have been grappling with the consequences of the tenants’ refusal to vacate the property. “It’s been a nightmare,” she stated. “I never wanted it to come to this, but I felt I had no choice. The house is in shambles, and I can’t afford to keep it like this.”

Despite a court ruling mandating the tenants’ eviction by October 31, 2024, the tenants remained uncooperative. When bailiffs arrived to serve the eviction notice, the tenants refused to engage or acknowledge their presence. Instead, the notice was ultimately taped to the front door of the apartment.

Following the court’s decision, the landlord took steps to remove the tenants’ belongings from the property, placing them outside for the tenants to retrieve. However, the now former tenants have not returned to collect their items, leaving the landlord with the burden of arranging for their disposal and footing the bill for that disposal.

“The landlord telling TNN “This isn’t what I wanted at all, I just wanted my property back and to move on. Now I have to deal with the aftermath of their things sitting there. It’s just more stress.”

The three bedroom unit which was being rented at $1900 per month, has suffered significantly over the years. With windows boarded up and the tenants refusing to allow for essential maintenance, it has fallen deeper into major disrepair. The landlord expressed concern for the safety and integrity of the building, emphasizing that the situation has become untenable.

The landlord is now faced with the additional responsibility of clearing the roadside clutter left by the tenants. “I’ve tried everything to resolve this peacefully.”

“I’m at my wits’ end. I just want to reclaim my property and move forward.”

The case highlights the complexities of landlord-tenant relationships and the often-lengthy process of eviction in the face of non-compliance.

As the community watches closely, the landlord is adamant they had hoped for a different outcome and went beyond what would be expected to assist the tenant in reducing their arrears and reaching a rpositive esolution to this prolonged dispute. Alas, it’s now clear, that was not to be.
