The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that a 40-year-old male has succumbed to injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle road traffic collision, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday 29th January 2023.
Initial reports indicated the collision involved three motorcycles and a motorcar. However, it has since been confirmed there were four motorbikes and a motorcar involved.
The 40-year-old male was riding a motorcycle east on South Road, Southampton, when upon reaching the area of Henry the VIII restaurant, he reportedly attempted to overtake a motorcar travelling in the same direction and collided with three other bikes traveling in a westerly direction.
Police and other emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the 40-year-old male unresponsive.
He was attended to by EMTs and transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment, but was subsequently pronounced dead.
This marks the first road traffic fatality of 2023.
One of the motorcycle riders who was headed in the opposite direction sustained a broken arm and was also transported to hospital, where at last check, he was being prepared for surgery. His injury is not considered life threatening.
It remains unclear whether any of the other two motorcycle riders headed west were injured in the collision, as they rode away from the scene on one of the bikes involved.
Traffic was diverted away from the scene which remained closed for an extended period while it was forensically processed.
We wish to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this exercise.
