Independent Members of Parliament have a Purpose says Renee Webb

In a recent op-ed, former PLP government member Renee Webb sheds light on the critical role that independent members of parliament play in shaping a robust and effective democracy.

Drawing from her political experience, Webb argues that as Bermuda’s political landscape evolves, independent voices in the House of Assembly are essential for fostering healthy debate, holding the government accountable, and representing diverse perspectives that may otherwise be overlooked by traditional party lines.

Her insights suggest that, moving forward, the presence of independent MPs could be pivotal in ensuring a more balanced and representative political system.

The following is to educate the public, particularly voters, on how independent members of parliament can assist in improving Bermuda’s parliamentary process by giving the public a choice away from party politics.

Independent (non- party) members of parliament are known to operate in the following manner:

They can wield significant influence particularly in a divisive party system.

1. They do not belong to a political party. Elected based onpersonal reputation, education, their personal beliefs, theirown platform, local issues, and constituency issues.
2. Known nationally or locally for getting things done and assisting in their community etc.
3. They have the same power as other members of parliament.
4. They can introduce and debate bills and vote on legislation.
5. In terms of effectiveness, they have the ability to build a coalition, work with other members of parliament to achieve objectives, impact decision making and bring bills to parliament
6. They do not have to vote any particular party line (PLP or OBA).
7. However, they do have the ability and choice to vote on legislation brought to parliament by other members of a political party or independent members should they choose.
8. They are not obliged to work under any party whip ( OBA or PLP) and can vote independently of a political party or group.
9. They are not bound to vote with any political party or other independent members of Parliament.
10. Their choice on how they vote and behave in Parliament is much broader than PLP or OBA (parties ) members of parliament since they will not be instructed on how to vote,  when to speak, and on what topics. Their choice is their own not that of a party or group.

For further information how independent candidates work in their Parliament check out the following British Crown dependencies:

Cayman Islands Legislature which  12 independent members out of 19 members of parliament.

Guernsey which has 38 independent members of parliament out of 38 members.

As well the UK Parliament which has 13 independent members of Parliament.

Bermuda is not the first or the last UK colony to have effective independent members of parliament.  We simply need to educate the voters on how having a parliamentary system with independent members will help us to move away from an adversarial, fighting, racially based Parliament.
