Inappropriate Content Shown During Middle School Zoom Lessons

Students and parents at Clearwater Middle School have been warned about inappropriate content being shown during Zoom lessons. Principal Lisa Swan recently issued the following statement regarding the incidents:

“ It has come to my attention that students are showing inappropriate content during Zoom lessons. Please understand that if such material is shared during a lesson, the student will be suspended and the teacher will automatically report all incidents to the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) and the police.”

“ All Zoom lessons are recorded. Please have a conversation with your student on the seriousness of this information. We want this difficult time to be used to concentrate on the essential curriculum content to grow students academically. We don’t want to be deterred by students being silly or thinking that it’s not a big deal. We are thinking about the academic, social and emotional well-being of our students.”

On Monday September 13, the Bermuda Police Service released the following statement about the sharing of intimate images without people’s consent:

“ The BPS is aware of images and videos circulating on social media showing intimate encounters between locals and advises members of the public that the non-consensual sharing of intimate images is an offence.”

“ Residents are reminded that the Criminal Code Amendment (Non-Consensual Sharing of Intimate Images) Act 2021 became law on June 15 of this year and under the Act, persons convicted of relevant offences can receive up to five years in prison.”

“ Therefore, should any member of the public receive such content, it is strongly recommended that they delete and not share it. It should also be noted that circulating such content could additionally constitute an offence under the Telecommunications Act of 1986; with the punishment on summary conviction listed as one year in prison or a fine of $2000, or both.”
