Hamilton Parish Hurricanes’ hopes of securing a ‘three-peat’ at this year’s Bermuda Smash Invitational took a hit on Sunday, as they suffered a 54-run defeat to the Pembroke Panthers at the National Sports Center’s North Field.
After cruising past the Sandys Spartans by five wickets on Saturday, the Hurricanes looked a shadow of themselves on day two. Their once-vaunted batting line-up was systematically dismantled by a Panthers attack led by Jamaican slow bowler Fabian Allen, who delivered a remarkable display of left-arm orthodox spin, taking five wickets for just two runs.
Allen received crucial support from medium-pacer Jermal Proctor, who claimed three wickets for 13 runs.
As a result, the Hurricanes became the first team at this year’s event to lose while batting second on a pitch that had previously favoured teams chasing a target.
To make matters more surprising—and perhaps concerning for the defending champions—they were chasing a modest target of 131 for victory, yet were bowled out for just 76.
The Panthers owed much to their captain Sabir, whose 33-ball 41, featuring two sixes and four fours, pushed the team past the century mark and put the opposition under pressure.
Allen, who also made a valuable contribution with the bat by scoring 28, was named Player of the Match.
As a result of their victory, the Panthers now lead the tournament standings after two days of play, having earlier defeated Smith’s Sixers.
Meanwhile, in the day’s opening match, Smith’s Sixers continued their tournament struggles, succumbing to the Sandys Spartans.
Delray Rawlins was the standout performer, scoring 81 off 35 balls and taking two wickets, as the Spartans defeated the Sixers by seven wickets in a rain-shortened contest.
Chasing 146 in 13 overs, Rawlins’ rapid scoring and crucial wickets helped the Spartans reach 150 for three with three balls to spare. Winning the toss and knowing the target proved decisive in the rain-affected match.
The win keeps the Spartans in tournament contention, with an even record after two matches, while the Sixers, who have consistently struggled at this tournament, once again find themselves at the bottom of the standings.
