Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda volunteers donate over 28,000 hours of service

The Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda (HAB) acknowledges the strength of the organisation is its volunteers, who donated more than 28,000hours in 2023.

“We have only 12 salaried staff,” said HAB president Patrick Cerra. “It’s the hard work and dedication of our volunteers that enable us to provide funding to Bermuda Hospitals Board, managers of the island’s only hospitals.

“Our three outlets – The Pink Café and the Gift Shop at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, and The Barn near the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute – are our main source of income, allowing us to assist the hospitals in purchasing much-needed medical equipment and supplies.”

In 2023, the HAB secured 28,253 hours from its volunteers:23,691 hours from its adult volunteers and 4,562 from its candy stripers.

“I’m so pleased to announce these figures and so grateful to all our volunteers for their efforts,” said Mr Cerra. “They provide a range of services absolutely free, including manning reception desks at KEMH, assisting non-resident patients and their families, wait service in The Pink Café, as well assorting, stocking and sales assistance at The Gift Shop and The Barn.”

BHB CEO & President Scott Pearman said: “We salute the HAB volunteers. We recognise that their commitment has made so much possible at our hospitals over the years. Here are just a few of the items they’ve donated: a CT scanner, an x-ray machine, ambulances, specialised medical vehicles and wheelchairs.

“Since its inception in 1953, the HAB has supported us withdonations worth millions. We thank each of their many volunteers for making this possible.

“The HAB is a valued BHB partner, helping us to fulfil our mission of continuously striving to deliver the highest quality and safest care to our patients, every day.”
