Earlier today, a small group of dignitaries, including Premier David Burt, gave a heartfelt farewell to Her Excellency, the Governor, Rena Lalgie and her husband Mr. Jacob Hawkins.
The farewell ceremony took place landside, outside of the L. F. Wade International Airport departure area, where Her Excellency was received by Premier Burt, Deputy Governor Tom Oppenheim, Opposition Leader Jarion Richardson, Chief Justice Larry Mussenden, and the Secretary to the Cabinet, Marc Telemaque.
Rena Lalgie was Sworn-In as Bermuda’s Governor in December 2020. It was an historic appointment, as not only was she the first female Governor, but she was also the first Black Governor in Bermuda’s 400-plus year history.
Following Ms. Lalgie’s departure, Premier Burt once again took the opportunity to express his gratitude for her dedicated service to Bermuda, saying, “Governor Lalgie’s contributions have been welcomed in our community and she has left an enduring legacy. She has served Bermuda with distinction, and her departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the island’s history. On behalf of the Government and the people of Bermuda, we express our heartfelt gratitude and wish her continued success and fulfilment in her future endeavours.”
Bermuda’s next Governor is set to arrive this month.
