A section of road in Glebe Road has officially been renamed Hendrickson Way, fulfilling a commitment made by Minister of Culture Owen Darrell to honour the Hendrickson son family and its longstanding contribution to the community and Bermuda.
The announcement was made today in the presence of members of the Hendrickson family, residents and members of the wider community.
Minister Darrell said the idea came after he visited the Hendrickson son family home, known as “Granny’s House,” on Boxing Day of last year, where he spent time with members of the H & H Companies family trust learning about the family’s history and connection to the area.
Darrell said the visit became even more significant following the tragic death of Zaniko Hendrickson just days later.
At Zaniko’s viewing, a member of the family reminded the Minister that there had been discussions years earlier about renaming a portion of the road in recognition of the Hendrickson family.
Darrell said he immediately committed to pursuing the request, noting that naming and recognition falls under his ministerial responsibilities.
“I did commit at the funeral that I would do it,” Darrell said.
He acknowledged that some people questioned whether the promise would actually be fulfilled, but said the Department of Culture was instructed to follow the proper process. The Renaming and Recognition Committee was subsequently convened and considered the request.
Darrell said the decision was not simply about making a political promise, but about recognizing generations of the Hendrickson son family.
He said the renaming was particularly important in honouring Zaniko, as well as his father, grandfather and grandmother, while recognizing the family’s broader contribution to the Glebe Road community and Bermuda.
The Minister also acknowledged that the Hendrickson sons were among several company families with deep roots in the area, but said this particular request was specifically made to honour the Hendrickson son family.
As the road closure and unveiling took place, family members and residents gathered despite showers earlier in the morning.
Darrell, who also represents the area as the constituency MP, said the community and local businesses had been supportive of the initiative, including the temporary closure of the road for today’s ceremony.
“This is not about Owen Darrell. It is not about the PLP. It is not even about the Government at this point,” he said. “It is about honouring the Hendrickson sons family.”
While acknowledging that the completion of the project could be described as a case of a “promise made, promise kept,” Darrell rejected the idea that the occasion should be viewed through a political lens.
Instead, he said the focus should remain on celebrating the Hendrickson son family, its history and its lasting legacy in the community.
Today’s unveiling marks the formal recognition of that legacy, with Hendrickson son Way now standing as a permanent tribute to generations of Hendrickson sons who have helped shape the Glebe Road community and Bermuda.
