Today, Bermuda proudly celebrates the 90th birthday of one of its most iconic and influential figures — Sir John W. Swan, a national hero, statesman, and trailblazing businessman.
Sir John, who served as Bermuda’s longest-serving Premier, remains a towering figure in the island’s political and social history. For over 13 years, he led Bermuda through a transformative era, championing both progress and unity.
Among his many milestones, Sir John is best remembered for orchestrating a historic treaty between Bermuda, the United States, and Britain, marking a powerful moment in diplomacy for the island. He was also the architect of Bermuda’s independence referendum — a bold step in defining the island’s future. Though the vote ultimately failed, and Sir John stepped down in its wake, the move cemented his legacy as a leader unafraid to pursue big visions for his country.
Most recently, in the February 2025 election, Sir John once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to Bermuda by supporting a new independent political movement. While the effort did not succeed, it reminded many of his lifelong dedication to national growth and sovereignty.
Outside of politics, Sir John Swan has made a name for himself as a respected real estate mogul and businessman, contributing to the island’s economic development through decades of enterprise and leadership.
