The Ministry of Home Affairs has noted the findings of the recent Royal Gazette commissioned public opinion survey regarding Bermuda’s potential full membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The story was featured in yesterday’s (July 13) editon.
In the interest of balance and transparency, the Government’s response to the survey findings is as follows:
A Ministry spokesperson said, “The Government notes the survey findings and is encouraged by the continued level of public engagement on the issue of Bermuda’s potential full membership in CARICOM.
“While the results provide valuable insight into public sentiment, it would be inappropriate for the Government to speculate or make assumptions about the views or decision-making of individuals or demographic groups based solely on polling data. Public opinion on complex national issues is shaped by a wide range of factors, including personal experiences, economic considerations, individual priorities and differing perspectives on Bermuda’s future.
“Overall, the findings demonstrate that Bermudians remain actively interested in the CARICOM discussion and the potential implications of full membership for the country.
“Throughout this consultation, Bermudians have expressed a range of views through town hall meetings, stakeholder discussions, written submissions, the Government’s public survey and independent polling. Different perspectives on an issue of this significance are neither unexpected nor unwelcome. Indeed, they reinforce why the Government undertook a public consultation before making any decision.
“The consultation process was designed to give Bermudians the opportunity to ask questions, challenge assumptions and help shape the national conversation. It has also shown that many people are seeking additional information about what full CARICOM membership would and would not mean for Bermuda.
“As part of the Government’s ongoing due diligence, Premier David Burt and Minister of Home Affairs Alexa Lightbourne recently participated in the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting. Their engagement with regional leaders provided a valuable opportunity to discuss matters relevant to Bermuda’s consideration of full membership, gain further insight into the governance and operations of the Community, and ensure that Bermuda’s assessment is informed by the most current and comprehensive information available. This engagement forms part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that the forthcoming White Paper provides Bermudians with the detailed facts and analysis necessary for informed decision-making.”
