The Till’s Hill region of Court Street literally buzzing on Saturday with the distinct whir of hair clippers, as Frontline Barber Shop offered free hair cuts to a multitude of schoolboys, preparing for their return to the classroom following the summer break.
Heading up the giveaway and carrying the biggest smile was proprietor and area mainstay, Wilbur Burt, a man with a penchant for giving back to his community.
Burt told TNN of the success of the event, which also featured free hot dogs, hamburgers, as well as school bags and school accessories for boys, as well as for some lucky girls that ventured with their brothers.
“It was very successful,”;said Mr Burt. “It went off a lot better than what I had expected. It was just something to give back to the community.
“This year was my first year doing it and I know that next year will be even better, God willing.
“One thing I do believe in is giving back. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than seeing a young boy with a fresh haircut, a new school bag for free ready to go out and learn new things
“I wish there were more people who could or would do the same thing to help our children.”
“I had 55 bags for boys alone, and if he brought his sister along I had one for her too. I had 30-something bags for girls as well.”
Mr Burt noted the contribution to and support of area Member of Parliament, Jason Hayward, to the cause.
“I take my hat off to Jason Hayward, I told him about the event weeks ago and he told me that he would donate something,” explained Mr Burt. “So I called him the other day, went and picked him up at his office and we went to the wholesale place, where he bought several items to contribute to the cause, for which I’m grateful and thank him.”
Asked if he planned on inviting outside sponsors to help in future such events, Burt noted his preference to remain grassroots, although he would likely not turn away those wishing to donate.
“I plan to do it out of my pocket, (but) if anyone wants to jump on board they’re welcome to do so and contribute to the cause.”
