From Broadcaster to Barrister: Lamone Woods Turns a Lifelong Dream into Reality

The man behind Bermuda’s Crimson Media Channel 82 Network has achieved a remarkable milestone. After years of determination, perseverance, and sacrifice, Lamone Woods has successfully completed his legal studies, passed the bar in England and Wales, and is now on the path toward practicing law in Bermuda.

Speaking with TNN Trevor Lindsay, Woods reflected on a journey that began with a dream and was fueled by challenges he encountered throughout his career.

“It was a lot of work,” Woods said. “But I made a decision a long time ago that one day I was going to study law and become a lawyer. The opportunity arose, and I was able to do it.”

Woods’ path to the legal profession was anything but conventional. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, when the media and video production industry slowed dramatically, he sought stability through education. He completed a postgraduate degree in education through the University of the West Indies and Bermuda College, hoping to transition into teaching mathematics.

Despite earning the qualification and already holding an engineering degree, Woods was unable to secure a mathematics teaching position.

“That never made sense to me,” he recalled. “After that didn’t happen, I decided that if I ever went back to school again, it would be for something professional—a lawyer or a doctor—something where once you’re in, you’re in.”

His decision was also shaped by years of battling regulatory hurdles while operating Channel 82. Woods spent more than a decade challenging restrictions that prevented his station, which primarily showcased local content, from airing commercial advertisements.

“I often found myself sitting across from government lawyers and corporate lawyers,” he explained. “I wasn’t a lawyer, and I felt outnumbered. They would cite regulations and laws that, to me, didn’t make sense.”

Those experiences sparked a desire to understand the legal system from the inside.

“It gave me a fire,” Woods said. “I wanted to learn how the law worked and how it was interpreted.”

Determined to pursue his dream, Woods enrolled at University of Law, completing a Graduate Diploma in Law, a conversion program designed for individuals who already hold degrees in other disciplines.

After successfully completing the program, he took the next step by enrolling in the Bar Practice Course. He was also accepted into Middle Temple, one of the four historic Inns of Court required for aspiring barristers in England and Wales.

The journey required significant personal sacrifice. Woods left Bermuda, his wife, and his young daughter to study in London.

“The law thing is no joke,” he said. “People told me how demanding it would be, and they weren’t exaggerating. It was work from one end of the day to the other. It was school, dorm, school, dorm.”

The dedication paid off. Woods successfully completed the course and was called to the Bar in England and Wales.

Today, he holds the status of an unregistered barrister while seeking a pupillage placement—the final practical training stage required before being called to the Bermuda Bar and practicing law locally.

“I’m looking at all the possibilities,” Woods said. “At first, I thought I wanted to go into litigation, maybe defense or prosecution. Now I’m also interested in international and corporate law. The sky’s the limit.”

While exploring opportunities in the legal field, Woods continues to operate Channel 82 and consult on various projects. For those who know him, his relentless drive comes as no surprise.

“I’m always doing something,” he said with a smile. “I’m just waiting to see what blessings come next.”

Woods’ achievement serves as an inspiring example of resilience, lifelong learning, and determination. From entrepreneur and broadcaster to barrister, his journey demonstrates that it is never too late to pursue a dream, no matter how challenging the path may be.
