A former senior Bermuda Customs officer with decades of service has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars after admitting his role in a conspiracy to import cannabis into the island.
Scott Brown, of Southampton, appeared before Supreme Court Justice Juan Wolffe today, where he was sentenced following his guilty pleas to charges of possessing cannabis and conspiring with others to import the controlled drug into Bermuda.
The offenses were committed between an unknown date and April 19, 2023. Brown also admitted concealing money believed to be criminal property between April 19 and May 1, 2023.
The case stems from a joint law enforcement operation launched in 2023, culminating in Brown’s conviction and sentencing. Once regarded as a seasoned customs officer with approximately 35 years of service, Brown had been recognized by the Department of Customs for his long-standing career as recently as 2025.
However, a government spokesperson confirmed that Brown is no longer employed by the Department of Customs.
In a statement, the Ministry of National Security acknowledged the outcome of the case, describing Brown’s actions as “a serious violation of the high standards of trust, professionalism, integrity and accountability that the Department of Customs strives every day to uphold.”
The court also heard that confiscation proceedings are expected to take place in the near future to determine whether assets linked to the criminal activity will be seized.
Today’s sentence brings to a close a significant prosecution involving a former senior law enforcement official whose position carried substantial public trust, underscoring the serious consequences for those entrusted with protecting Bermuda’s borders who instead engage in criminal conduct.
