Former Premier and Attorney General Share Thoughts on Caines’ Call to the Bar

Former Premier of Bermuda and former leader of the Progressive Labour Party Paula Cox called the occasion of Ariana Caines, granddaughter of the legendary Dame Lois Browne-Evans being called to the Bermuda Bar yesterday a “momentous occasion.”

“ I could imagine Dame Lois’ dulcet and fiery tones if she were one of the people who was ushering in Ariana,” Ms. Cox said. “She would have been tremendously proud, as we all are, of her granddaughter.”

Ms. Cox believes that right now is an very vital time on the island for women in positions of power and influence, and she expects Ms. Caines to be a woman of influence.
“ With the issues of female sustainability and also environmental issues as well as just equity issues, I expect her to do right by the people of Bermuda and the people of the world,” she said.

Now that Ms. Caines is officially a member of the Bermuda bar, Ms. Cox hopes that she will recognize that she, along with all lawyers in Bermuda, are in a social contract with the people of the country and with their clients.
“ Lawyers have to bring responsibility as we seek to achieve justice and equity, and I think that Ms. Caines will do that,” she said.

Former Attorney General and former PLP MP Michael Scott, similar to Ms. Cox, believes that Ms. Caines will really bring the fight for justice on the island and that she will find that fighting spirit in very short order.

“ It is wonderful that Ms. Caines has prepared herself to very out a legacy on the train and in the arena of legal counsel,” Mr. Scott said.
Mr. Scott first knew Dame Lois Browne-Evans in a professional sense when he worked as a court associate and feels immense pride that her granddaughter is following in his former colleague’s footsteps.

“ I think that Ms. Caines feels that the ancestors have come and made themselves present this afternoon, to celebrate this occasion of her admission to the bar,” he said.
