Former Mayor Stages Solo Protest

In the midst of all the chatter with regard to the Southampton Princess refit and its  seemingly mandatory, attendant SDO, there stood a solo protest vigil upon Crow Lane roundabout.

The non-stranger staging and speaking his opposition to the add-on package at Turtle Hill was former St George’s mayor E Michael Jones, the decorated effervescent septuagenarian displaying few signs of slowing down.

His two signs reading, “South P No” and “GENCOM say no” in reference to the Southampton mega development plans.
Jones was not so much against the refit of the main property, housing the flagship Southampton Princess, but the magnitude of the additional units to be packed on to the site as per the recently approved SDO plans.

“There’s a lot of open space that’s going to be lost,” said Jones. “It’s actually interesting, because there are maybe people that don’t think I want a hotel, I do.

“I mean I come from an area that benefits from hotels, so I certainly want a hotel. But I would like for them to be more conscious. To be more thoughtful about the scale and the scope of what is being proposed.

“Some of you may remember I was involved in rebuilding the former Holiday Inn, so I understand from the Marriott Corporation. And I would love to see them have The Princess Hotel open tomorrow if we could, but it’s about the scale of what they’re doing. The thoughtfulness and the scope of it what they intend on doing.
“25 percent of the golf course will be gone.

“I would like for them to be to be more conscious about what makes Bermuda. The reason that they’ve come here is because Bermudians have made it the way that it is and we’ve kept it pristine.”
Jones was interested in seeing a scaled down version of the project as an alternative view.
