The 2023/24 football season is due to commence tonight at Devonshire Rec. (8pm), with the Charity Cup, involving Premier Division and Friendship Trophy champions PHC and FA Cup winners North Village.
Each team has recorded a record seven Charity Cup titles to date and will want to be able to claim sole bragging rights to an historical eighth championship.
Both teams will also be absent key players in attack, with the Zebras having lost Paul Simons to St George’s Colts during the off-season transfer market, while Rams likewise had key front-man Justin Bell travel eastward to join Hamilton Parish.
PHC also lost the services of head coach Winston Trott to retirement, with Quincy Hunt expected to rule the sidelines this season, his first challenge being that of matching wits with a vastly more experienced Village gaffer, Kenny Thompson.
Thompson and his men thwarted PHC’s triple crown quest by seizing the FA Cup and and the latter will be out for revenge in that regard.
Zebras will also be playing in remembrance of former captain Marco Warren, who was tragically killed in what is believed to be a hit and run collision earlier this year, and incident that remains unsolved by police.
Meanwhile, action switches to Bernard’s Park on Monday afternoon for the first round of the Dudley Eve Trophy, as Hamilton Parish tackled Devonshire Cougars in the first match at 3 pm, while St George’s face Dandy Town at 5 pm.
