Bad weather proved a determining factor during today’s Eastern Counties Cup clash between Bailey’s Bay and Flatts Victoria, with intermittent rain contributing greatly to a drawn result.
Numerous stoppages throughout Bay’s innings, enabled the champions to bat for an extended period, manufacturing a modest total of 227 for nine in their allotted overs.
However, with the clock reading four o’clock by the time the challengers went to bat _ and a thunderous downpour arriving less than an hour later _ a draw always appeared inevitable.
The morning saw Bay win the toss and elect to bat on a slow, flat track.
However, despite the unfavourable bowling conditions, Flatts’ vice-captain Kamau Leverock attacked with a venom that maligned Bay’s top order.
Leverock accounted for the first four batsmen to fall. He was the bowler of record in the cases three victims _ Coolidge Durham, whom he had caught behind for 10, Terryn Fray caught by Keegan Jones for 28, and Tre Manders lbw for 19 _ while he did the fielding in the dismissal of Delray Rawlins (28).
Bay found themselves in difficulty at 68 for three, when Derrick Brangman (47) and Tre Manders engaged in a 65-run fourth-wicket partnership that took the score to 133, when the former was run out by Shane Robinson.
Mike Agard (47) and Sinclair Smith (36) helped rectify matters, their contributions helping Bay get across the 200 mark to a final total of 227 for nine.
Leverock ended with bowling figures of four for 81 from 20 overs. He was ably assisted by Jan-Johan Nel and Kevin Hurdle, who each claimed two wickets.
In their limited response Flatts reached 74 for two, when lightning flashed, thunder clapped and the heavens opened, dumping a deluge which ended matters, leaving Bay still in title possession.
