TNN News is receiving word from a reliable source of a reports of a violent disturbance that occurred yesterday at Westgate Correctional Facility during a routine inspection by the Treatment of Offenders Board (TOOB).
Sources indicate that during scheduled rounds, officers began conducting searches inside maximum security units inmate cells. A confrontation reportedly erupted when one inmate attempted to create a distraction—allegedly to prevent officers from discovering illicit cell phones in the possession of other inmates.
The altercation escalated into a physical struggle, during which five correctional officers were injured. All five sought medical attention from to the hospital for various injuries. While the exact nature of the injuries has not been disclosed, they are not believed to be life-threatening.
The incident occurred in the maximum security unit, and sources say the inmate at the center of the disturbance is well known to the prison system for similar disruptive behavior.
Several inmates were arrested and are expected to be charged with offenses including assault and obstruction.
Cell phones and other contraband continue to be a serious concern at Westgate Correctional Facility. Prison authorities are working to address the ongoing security challenges in the facility.
