Fanfare Arrival Planned For Flora Duffy

 Fanfare Arrival Planned For Flora Duffy

The public will be aware that Ms. Duffy is Bermuda’s first Olympic Gold Medalist, and October 18th has been designated a public holiday in recognition of her historic achievement at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and World Triathlon.

On Monday at 2.15 pm, following the receipt of her arrival COVID-19 PCR test results, Flora will travel from the L.F. Wade International Airport to Hamilton via a special motorcade. Once in Hamilton, Ms. Duffy will stop at the Cabinet Office where she will meet with local dignitaries for a special presentation.

The motorcade route details are as follows:

Ø 2.15 pm the motorcade will travel from the airport, passing schools on the route.
· Route: North shore past Flatts Village > Middle road to Tee Street > South Road to Middle Road until Manse Road on to Harbour Road > Circle Warwick Academy via Morgan’s Road > Back to Middle Road to the Cabinet Office presentation.

Ø 2.45 pm – Motorcade arrives at the Cabinet Office grounds for an outdoor presentation.

Ø 3.30 pm – Motorcade will travel to City Hall for a presentation.

The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport welcomed members of the public to show their national pride by lining the motorcade route and waving their Bermuda flags and cheering Flora on as she passes.

But the Ministry urged the public to do so in a responsible and safe way. This means not congregating in large groups, maintaining the appropriate physical distance and wearing a mask if within 6 feet of persons who are not from your household.

Other events that will be taking place on October 18th for Flora Duffy include:
Ø A ribbon cutting at the National Sports Centre’s South field to rename it the Flora Duffy Stadium;
Ø A photo op at Corkscrew Hill Devonshire which is to be renamed Flora Duffy Hill;
Ø A special recognition by the Bermuda Post Office;
Ø An artistic mural announcement;
Ø An open air Tribute Concert.

It should be stressed that all public facing events will be strictly in keeping with the current health and safety guidelines in place.

The Ministry notes that many if not all of the events celebrating Flora Duffy will be live streamed for the public to enjoy in real time. Those not live streamed will be recorded and aired via CITV soon after.

The Government television station will carry the motorcade and the Cabinet Office presentation live. And the Bermuda Broadcasting Company (BBC) will also have live television, radio and online streaming coverage of the motorcade via their stations.

Lastly, the Ministry along with all of Bermuda, looks forward to welcoming home Flora and celebrating with the community her extraordinary and historic achievements.
