Families are suffering with some living in cars says WRC Director

The Executive Director at the Women’s Resource Center, Juanae Crockwell is expressing concern about the plight facing many familles in Bermuda today.

The situation she says, was highlighted during a recent grocery giveaway put on by the organisation.

“We received a donation of bags of groceries and announced it via social media. More than one hundred women responded”.

Ms. Crockwell says the need proved to be greater than resources. A situation that she tells us is becoming more prevalent, with mostly women and women led homes being impacted.

“What we have now is we’re approaching a situation where Bermuda may well be on the verge of facing unprecedented levels of poverty”. She added, “Affordable housing is proving to be a major issue for women. There are women who are living in cars with their children, but continue to make do as if all is well”

The Women’s Resource Center Ms. Crockwell continued, is doing its best to meet the demands for service but it is becoming harder and harder to do that with the increasing level of need.

“When you factor in that many of these women are mothers with additional mouths to feed, the situation is compounded and we have at times had to try to turn straw into gold to try in efforts to help.”

Just this past Christmas, one hundred and thirteen families were assisted by the WRC and a further thirteen were assisted via the organisation’s adopt a family programme.
