An eyewitness to yesterday’s daylight shooting on Court Street described the incident as “a scary experience” that left bystanders running for their lives.
Speaking to TNN, the woman—who asked not to be named—recalled seeing chaos unfold as shots rang out.
“You see people running up and down, screaming. You see somebody with a bullet wound running across the street, blood all over him. You never know where those bullets are going to fly. You don’t know anything—you just react.”
The eyewitness said the gunfire erupted near a busy stretch of Court Street, where multiple businesses, including a barbershop, Jamaican Grill, and clothing stores, operate. She stressed that the attack could easily have claimed more lives.
“Somebody could have been walking right past them. Anybody could have been hit.”
Despite the police station being only a block away, she expressed frustration at what she sees as limited proactive policing.
“They need to walk around and do their job—not just when things happen. My little girl asked, ‘Why can’t the police find out where these guns are?’ When they see people crowding up, tell them to move along. Those three guys were standing there the whole time I was there.”
The witness also raised concerns about public safety, noting that surveillance cameras in the immediate area were reportedly not functioning at the time of the shooting.
“That makes it even worse. It’s like the Government don’t even care about our safety. How can we feel safe if you let dangerous people hang around and you don’t even have cameras there?”
She urged authorities to act decisively against gang-related violence, which she says has plagued Bermuda for nearly 25 years.
“Something needs to happen “Now”. We are to relaxed. We have become to comfortable with these shootings and let me remind you it’s only young black men dying. When does it end?”
Police have not released any further details about the suspects and at the time of the story being released no arrests related to the incident has been made.
