Ex-female police officer charged with fraud in Magistrate Court

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, today was a 66-year-old woman from St. George’s was accused of orchestrating a sophisticated fraud scheme involving the creation and use of a forged marriage certificate. The scheme allegedly led to the fraudulent collection of more than $47,000 in pension benefits.

•The first charge against Loucietta Beckles alleges that between an unknown date and March 24, 2021, she made a false instrument, specifically, a fraudulent marriage certificate, in Bermuda and the United States. She is accused of intending to use this document to deceive the Accountant General Department, causing them to accept the certificate as genuine, potentially resulting in actions detrimental to another party.

•The second charge asserts that on June 17, 2021, Beckles knowingly used the forged marriage certificate, intending to deceive the Department of Social Insurance. The prosecution contends that by presenting the document as legitimate, she sought to induce the department to act in a manner that would harm their or another person’s interests.

•The third charge states that from March 24, 2021 to July 21, 2023, Beckles allegedly dishonestly obtained account credits totaling $47,018.61 from the Accountant General Department. She is accused of falsely representing herself as legally entitled to a monthly widower’s benefit or pension, thereby permanently depriving the department of the funds.

Beckles entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. Senior Magistrate Maxanne Anderson set her bail at $5,000 with a like surety. Beckles is scheduled to return to court on September 23, 2024.
