Earlier this morning, (Oct. 31), the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Weeks, JP, MP, convened an Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) Executive meeting to get the latest update on post Hurricane Melissa and to assess the resumption of public services.
Hurricane Melissa is no longer an immediate threat to Bermuda and has rapidly moved away from the island, having passed Bermuda in the early hours of this morning as a Category 2 storm. However there will be some windy and unsettled conditions from today through tomorrow.
Additionally the EMO notes that there are a number of downed wires and damaged utility poles across the island. Persons are asked to be cautious when moving about the island.
Following today’s EMO meeting, the public is advised of the following.
- The EMO has confirmed that main roadways are passable and that 12noon today has been determined as the “All Clear”.However, please use caution on the roads.
- The Causeway is open.
- The L.F. Wade International Airport will open at 12 noon.
- South Shore Road at Watch Hill Park is open.
- All public and private schools remain closed today and are expected to reopen on Monday, November 3.
- Government Offices will open at 1.00 p.m.
- Bus and ferry service remain suspended pending further assessments of commuter routes. A public advisory will be issued when service resumes.
- The Lamb/Foggo Clinic will close at 11.00 a.m.
- The Government Shelter at CedarBridge will close at 11.00 a.m.
- Today’s trash collection will be rolled over to tomorrow (Saturday).
- The BPS and the BF&RS reported no major emergencies.
Minister Weeks said, “As we emerge from Hurricane Melissa, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the people of Bermuda for your strength, patience, and unity during this anxious time. Your cooperation helped keep our island safe.
“I also want to sincerely thank our emergency personnel, first responders, and all those who worked through the night and into today to safeguard and protect our people and restore our infrastructure. Your dedication is outstanding.
“As we move through the day, I encourage everyone to remain cautious, check on your neighbors, and continue to follow official guidance. Recovery is a collective effort. Bermuda has weathered many storms, and time and again, we have proven that our spirit is unshakable.”
