The highly anticipated Eastern Counties Cup contest between champions Bailey’s Bay and challengers St David’s, scheduled for Saturday, looks a probable casualty of Hurricane Ernesto, now headed for Bermuda.
Indeed most planned weekend sporting events are facing postponement amid the threat of the rapidly advancing storm system wreaking havoc to the Island’s south.
Ernesto strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday as he advanced on a path of destruction, battering Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, presumably before blowing toward Bermuda.
Continuing to strengthen since being upgraded to hurricane status, the turbulent weather system battered Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Tuesday with 75 mph winds and up to 10 inches of rain that produced flash floods in some areas.
Most local cricket and sports lovers would only hope that recreational moments are all they might have to surrender- sacrificed- due to Hurricane Ernesto and that all human life would be preserved unharmed.
The Eastern County’s Cricket Association has already requested that patrons with camps at the grounds should remove all tarps and loose articles from the venue.
A decision to officially cancel the match has not yet been made but is anticipated.
Also likely to be delayed by at least a week is the start of the T20 cricket league season.
