Day 2 of the 84th Agricultural Exhibition: Sunshine, Schoolkids, and a Spirit of Tradition

Sunny skies and lively crowds marked Day 2 of the 84th Annual Agricultural Exhibition, with the fairgrounds buzzing with schoolchildren, seniors, and families enjoying Bermuda’s beloved springtime tradition.

We caught up with Minister of Culture and Sport, Owen Darrell, who stepped away from his duties for a short while to join in on the festivities.

“It’s a beautiful day out here,” he said with a smile. “There are very few clouds in the sky, and it’s not too hot yet—this is the kind of weather you love.”

Minister Darrell shared that his visit was inspired by a student performance from Port Royal School. “Someone in my office had a singer from there, so it was a good opportunity to come down. And then I got to see the overseas stunt bikes from New Jersey—that was really good too.”

Reflecting on the legacy of the Exhibition, Darrell spoke with pride: “As the Minister responsible for Culture, I can say this event is woven into the fabric of Bermuda. It’s where every child grows up knowing this is the place to be. You hang out with your friends, look at your crafts on display, and keep traditions alive—even after the disruptions of COVID. Some things in Bermuda are just standard, and this is one of them.”

Among the highlights of his day? “I’m about to go over and see one of Bermuda’s biggest traditions—our kites. And yes,” he whispered, “I had a slippy and a hotdog. Not on my meal plan, but it’s part of the experience!”

He emphasized the importance of supporting local vendors and the charitable causes behind many booths. “I’m happy to give away some of the cash I’ve got in my pocket. This is community, and it’s organic. We’re not here for photo ops—we’re here because this is what we do.”

As he prepared to head back to the office (after a quick visit to the Barclay Institute tent), Minister Darrell left us with a final thought: “It’s good to see my colleagues here, the Premier, pastors, and so many familiar faces. This is Bermuda at its best.”
