David Burt has announced he will resign as Premier and leave Cabinet, opting to serve as a backbencher and refocus on his constituency.
In a radio interview, Burt addressed the recent stir over changes to Progressive Labour Party membership.
He explained that concerns were raised after individuals who had recently opposed the PLP appeared on membership lists, prompting him to urge the party’s leadership to implement stricter vetting.
Burt insisted that only those with a true change of heart should be admitted as members.
This stance follows a new rule that bars those who publicly campaigned against the party in the past two elections from automatic membership.
Burt, who also remains Minister of Finance, acknowledged the absence of a formal vetting process in the party’s history, noting it was “for better or for worse.”
He emphasised that the party’s rules outline the central committee’s authority, and the democratic process must be respected, dismissing claims of constitutional violations.
Burt assured the public that he would formally resign at Government House on November 2 and devote his attention to serving as a backbencher for his constituency.
